Cincinnati MIDWESTCON 2024

The opportunity to collaborate with innovators who can amplify our efforts and cultivate a more inclusive and creative environment was the driving force behind becoming an 1819 startup partner and hosting MidwestCon here.

Midwestcon is a science fiction convention held annually in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area by the Cincinnati Fantasy Group. Midwestcon is an informal type of convention known as a relaxacon which means that it has no programming. Instead, it is notable as a means for science fiction fans to get together and talk to each other without the distractions of other conventions.

MidwestCon is designed to engage participants of all experience levels — from novices to seasoned tech enthusiasts — offering a wide array of specialized workshops and panel discussions on AI, blockchain, data visualization and a hackathon. The event ensures that even those with little to no prior tech experience can dive deep into the world of cutting-edge technologies.

Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval officially kicked off the event, welcoming students aged 18 and older to a week filled with innovation, learning and networking.

“MidwestCon is the premier destination for anyone looking to elevate their tech skills and connect with a vibrant community of innovators, venture capitalists, corporate leaders and policy influencers. These are the pioneers in research and the trailblazers in social impact,” said Richardson.

A conference exploring the intersections of creativity, innovation, technology and human experience is coming to Cincinnati next week.

On  Aug. 18 and 19 MidwestCon 2023 is partnering with Disrupt Art and the University of Cincinnati’s Digital Futures to host a diverse group of trailblazers and disruptors from across the country at Memorial Hall in Over-the-Rhine. The conference will highlight minority perspectives and aims to redefine technology’s role in society and how it can be used to enhance — not replace — human experiences and provide social impact.

“MidwestCon 2023 is more than a conference; it’s an experience,” Rob Richardson, MidwestCon founder, said in a press release. “We’re here to show the world how to use technology for the greater good — augmenting human intelligence, offering safety over surveillance, and disrupting the status quo. Our mission is to demonstrate that technology can and should serve humanity effectively, compassionately, and ethically.”

The conference’s keynote speakers, UC President Neville Pinto and Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, will discuss policy and innovation and how institutions can influence technology’s use for social justice and reform. Other speakers will include CCO of Procter & Gamble Damon Jones; Kala Gibson, executive vice president and chief corporate responsibility officer at Fifth Third Bank; and Adam Kahn, chief creative officer at Grey Midwest.

“Since coming into my role at Midwest Grey in 2019, I’ve always kept in mind the goal of wanting to make Cincinnati a creative destination transformed through the power of collaboration,” Kahn said in the release. “This is a vision that aligns directly with MidwestCon’s mission to be a cultural journey uniting creativity, technology, and social impact.”
